Sprinkles Cupcake ATM

About a week after sending online foodies on a virtual sugar high with the announcement of a cupcake ATM dispenser, the 24-hour bakery to the stars is open for business. A video by entertainment news site Insider.com gives viewers a first glimpse at how the cupcake ATM in Beverly Hills works.

After paying a steep $4 for their cupcake via credit card, customers at 24-Hour Sprinkles can choose between flavors like red velvet, chocolate, vanilla, chocolate marshmallow and Irish chocolate.

Once they make their selection on the touchscreen, customers watch as a robotic arm reaches into the cupcake repository which houses 600 pre-made mini cakes and delivers it in a small box.

Sprinkles Cupcakes boasts a clientele of celebrity sweet tooths like Katie Holmes, Oprah Winfrey, and Katy Perry.

Sprinkles founder Candace Nelson, also a judge on Food Network show Cupcake Wars, tells Insider.com the idea came to her during her pregnancy with her second child.

“I thought to myself, I’m the owner of a cupcake bakery and even I can’t get a cupcake in the middle of the night. So I had to come up with something.”

Cupcakes aren’t the only food item to become automated and go on-demand. Last year, an entrepreneur created a pizza vending machine in the US that can custom-build and deliver hot pizzas, while the French can get both freshly baked baguettes and raw milk from vending machines as well.
