An example of putting a modern spin on the classic mountain retreat can be found deep in the heart of Dillard, Georgia, where architects Mark Scogin and Merrill Elam have created an isolated getaway home that fully showcases the natural, rugged beauty of the Appalachians. A celebration of industrial form in a backwoods setting, the AIA award-winning ‘Mountain House’ is everything one could want in remote living experience and has recently been made available for a list price of $1.55 million.
Wood, self-weathering steel and reinforced concrete walls were used as the basis for their Mountain House construct. The resulting creation is a simple, yet elegant 2,400-square-foot design with soaring walls of glass that, as the Atlanta-based architects put it, represents, “a dialogue about the relationship of the natural to the manmade and the joys and wonders of both.” It offers three bedrooms and four-and-a-half baths, with a sizeable screened porch and various sitting areas, which are set around a central courtyard that anchors that works as the nexus of the property.
Walk outside the Mountain House and you will now find an add-on structure to the property, the ‘Mountain Tree House‘. Needing a little extra storage and space, Scogan and Elam were once again tasked with the project and created a detached structure, which features a garage that sits below a cantilevered guest quarters.
Borrowing from the design of the main house, the Mountain Tree House was forged of concrete, steel and wood, and features the same floor-to-ceiling walls of tempered glass. Running off to the side of the guest dwelling is also a sizeable deck and patio area, which offers quite a unique feature: it sits over rows of bamboo planters that will eventually grow through the cracks of the deck to give the Mountain Tree House an added layer of privacy and add to its stunning design.
The listing is presented by Yetty Arp of Sotheby’s International Realty – Atlanta Fine Homes.
