The plight of the American public during the Prohibition era resulted in an ingenious invention – an underground world of citizens indulging in the delights of deviously created cocktails and captivating cabaret shows. As revolutionary as these furtive establishments were, once the ban was lifted, the appeal of the speakeasy lost its luster. To truly revitalize the essence of Prohibition, the clandestine disposition and allure of the unknown would have to be resurrected in an unlikely venue. Enter J. Sheekey. One of London’s most iconic restaurants recently announced a series of performances aptly titled Sheekey’s Speakeasies; a playful alliterative name coalescing the heart and soul of the American Prohibition days and the theatrical roots of J. Sheekey’s Oyster Bar.
On the first Sunday of each month, the oyster bar will transform into a speakeasy, hosting a variety of music and comedy ensembles for diners. Although the term stems from bartenders silencing their rowdy drink-swilling customers by whispering “speak easy” to avoid unsolicited attention on the illegal bar, Sheekey’s Speakeasies’ entertainment encourages guests to become engrossed in the excitement and hilarity, as each performance will be unpredictable, unrehearsed and unforgettable. Curated by the quirky Scottish comedian, Hardeep Singh Kohli, contemporary acts in comedy, music and improvisation pave the way for a night of laughter and merriment while patrons sample a delectable seasonal menu, all for £30 per person. In the true spirit of Prohibition, upon arrival guests will receive a customized “Twinkle” cocktail. Though one shouldn’t anticipate a surprise appearance from the likes of Elliot Ness, guests are politely warned to “expect the unexpected”, because while the atmosphere is relaxed and lighthearted, a rousing new generation of Sunday nights has been born.
