The iPhone rumor mill continues to churn. It’s no secret that Apple is looking to launch a larger iPhone. Most analysts expect a 4.7-inch or 4.8-inch version. But now word is out that a 5.7-inch version of the iPhone is being considered by the folks at Cupertino.
The move into making larger smartphones – or “phablets” – comes in the wake of the success of Samsung’s line of Galaxy devices. The Korean electronics maker has become the chief rival in the smartphone market by offering a wide range of sizes and pricing options to consumers. The Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 2 have 5-inch and 5.5-inch screens, respectively.
Expect the larger iPhones to be part of the iPhone 6 launch. However, the inclusion of the larger screens is no guarantee. Some analysts point out that Apple’s production process is geared specifically for the smaller screen, and making the larger version would be a major undertaking.
As for the iPhone 5S, Apple will likely launch a lower priced version with plastic casings – and 5-6 color options. Pricing isn’t set, but $99 is considered a sweet spot that Apple would like to hit. The cheaper phone would help Apple make inroads in China and India – two of the largest growth markets.
At this point, it appears that the iPhone 5S will launch in September of this year. The iPhone 6 – including the larger 4.7-inch and 5.7-inch devices – would launch in 2014.
