Hyundai Metaplant America: Highly Advanced, Next-Generation Manufacturing

Hyundai Motor Group’s Metaplant America (HMGMA) in Bryan County, Georgia, doesn’t just build vehicles—it represents a fundamental shift in how cars are made, how workers are trained, and how a global automaker integrates itself into a local community.

The use of the word “Meta” in the name of the plant suggests a new paradigm in building automobiles through:

  • Advanced manufacturing
  • Smart factories
  • Robotics and AI integration
  • Next-generation mobility and EV production

And HMGMA delivers on all fronts.

Metaplant America

Just outside Savannah, Georgia, the massive Metaplant is assembling its next generation of electric vehicles, including models under the Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis brands. These EVs are engineered on Hyundai’s advanced E-GMP platform. Early production has focused on the Hyundai IONIQ series and future three-row electric SUVs, with the Genesis lineup expected to bring luxury EV craftsmanship into the mix, with capacity for Kia EVs as well.

But the real story of the Metaplant begins long before a vehicle rolls off the line, as Hyundai has invested heavily in workforce development through its on-site, state-of-the-art training academy. This facility serves as the intellectual backbone of the plant, where thousands of employees—many new to automotive manufacturing—are trained in advanced robotics, EV assembly, and quality control systems.

Walking through the academy, we witnessed a blend of classroom instruction and hands-on simulation, where workers learn to interact seamlessly with collaborative robots, or “cobots,” that assist rather than replace human labor.

The emphasis at Metaplant isn’t just on building cars—it’s on building careers. Hyundai has partnered with local technical colleges and universities across Georgia to create a pipeline of skilled workers, offering certifications and long-term career paths in an industry undergoing rapid transformation. For many residents of Bryan County and the greater Savannah area, the Metaplant represents access to high-paying, future-focused jobs that simply didn’t exist a decade ago.

The economic ripple effect has been substantial. Thousands of direct jobs have been created at the plant itself, with tens of thousands more emerging through suppliers, logistics companies, and supporting businesses. Small towns surrounding the facility are experiencing renewed growth, with new housing developments, restaurants, and retail centers springing up to support an expanding workforce. There’s even a Costco 25 minutes from the Metaplant, which speaks volumes about the growth Metaplant has fostered. Infrastructure improvements – from road expansions to enhancements at the nearby Port of Savannah – underscore the scale of Hyundai’s commitment to the region.

Yet, for all its size and economic power, the Metaplant is equally defined by its environmental ambition.

Hyundai designed the facility with sustainability at its core. The plant operates with a significantly reduced carbon footprint compared to traditional manufacturing sites, thanks to a combination of renewable energy integration, water recycling systems, and energy-efficient building design. Solar arrays and other clean energy sources are being incorporated to offset power consumption, while smart manufacturing systems optimize energy use in real time.

Even the logistics chain reflects this eco-conscious approach. Hyundai is working to minimize emissions in transportation by leveraging proximity to the Port of Savannah and incorporating more efficient shipping methods.

In fact, Hyundai has incorporated hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks into parts of its logistics ecosystem connected to the Metaplant.

Hyundai has been testing and deploying its hydrogen fuel-cell Class 8 trucks – primarily the Hyundai XCIENT Fuel Cell hydrogen-powered heavy-duty truck – as part of its clean logistics and carbon-reduction strategy in Georgia.

The hydrogen trucks are especially notable because:

• They produce only water vapor emissions.
• They can refuel faster than many battery-electric heavy trucks.
• They are better suited for long-haul and heavy-load operations than some current EV truck platforms.

The Hyundai Georgia operation is considered one of the largest examples in the U.S. of an automaker trying to integrate hydrogen, renewable energy, rail, trucking, and port logistics into one manufacturing ecosystem.

Inside the plant, advanced paint shops and assembly processes reduce waste and emissions, while closed-loop water systems ensure minimal environmental impact.

In many ways, the Metaplant is a blueprint—not just for Hyundai, but for the future of automotive manufacturing in America. It blends cutting-edge EV production with human-centered workforce development and a genuine commitment to sustainability.

Across all Hyundai Motor Company facilities in the U.S, including their North American headquarters in California, these operations, combined with those of Hyundai’s 850 independent dealers, contribute $20.1 billion annually and over 190,000 jobs to the U.S. economy.

During the media program, we drove two excellent full-electric vehicles from our base hotel in beautiful Savannah to the Metaplant – the 2026 IONIQ9 and IONIQ5. Once we arrived at the plant, we:

  • Attended a media briefing about the history of, and the daily execution at the plant

  • Were given a guided tour of HMGMA production facilities

  • Experienced first-ever media drives on HMGMA’s quality-assurance test track

  • And, after our tour, we had a total blast during on-road driving through the low country, then off-road with the IONIQ 5XRT

We were also shown a pre-production model of the stunning IONIQ9 Black Ink. This gorgeous EV is sure to be a best seller for Hyundai. You can read more about the Black Ink here

Hyundai Philanthropy

Hyundai is invested in the communities they serve in many ways, including philanthropy through several Hyundai/Genesis programs, including Hyundai Hope.

Supporting the communities where its employees live and work remains a core priority for Hyundai, driving investments that open doors for future innovators.

By bringing high‑quality STEM programming to regions anchored by Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama in Alabama, Hyundai Motor North America’s headquarters in California, Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America in Georgia, and Hyundai America Technical Center in Michigan, Hyundai’s goal is to strengthen local educational opportunities and provide students with the skills needed for future careers, including those within the automotive and mobility industries.

Prior to the Metaplant media event, Hyundai and the STEP Foundation, formerly the H2GP Foundation, hosted the second annual Georgia Hydrogen Grand Prix featuring the Hyundai RC Program. Through this initiative, middle and high school students learn engineering principles, renewable energy concepts, and automotive technologies by designing and racing hydrogen‑powered RC (radio-controlled) cars.

This year, 19 teams from four Bryan County schools competed. Winning teams, including Bryan County High School, advanced to the June 2026 Hydrogen Gran Prix World Championships in Bulle, Switzerland. The program reinforces career and technical education (CTE) readiness by teaching practical skills in project management, design, teamwork, and industry collaboration.

Hyundai donated $10,000 to Bryan County High School to benefit the school’s participation in the Georgia Hydrogen Grand Prix, and help pay for the high school, which won the local event, to travel to the 2026 World Championships in Switzerland.
