Absolute perfection. Those are the only words The Overhead Compartment could come up with to describe a night spent in the charming and luxurious South Harbor Inn. Located on Long Island’s North Fork in Southhold, New York, you feel when you arrive as though you are at the very tip of the world and, in many ways, you are; the ferry to Shelter Island and the roar of the ocean are so near you can practically touch them. Yet, Manhattan is only two hours away by car, and the Long Island Railroad station is just five minutes away – in this part of the world, paradise is easily accessible.
Proprietors Alex Azcona and Dan DeVito both have backgrounds in the luxury hospitality industry and that expertise is on display the moment you pull up to this beautifully restored Inn. It is clear that every detail has been carefully thought through and planned: the art on the walls, the books on the shelves, the knick-knacks on the tables, every inch of the South Harbor Inn feels precisely as it should – sophisticated and warm.
The Overhead Compartment stayed in the Gardiner’s Bay room, one of the four impeccably designed en-suite bedrooms that are warm, enticing and filled with frette linens, featherweight duvets and bespoke bath amenities. The daily full breakfast was nothing short of superb – freshly baked blueberry muffins, scrumptious coconut French Toast and excellent coffee – and the other public spaces are cozy and inviting, both inside and out. Also available are the 24/7 complimentary snacks and refreshments.
The South Fork of Long Island is known the world over for the glitz and glamour of The Hamptons, but the North Fork is increasingly the choice of knowledgeable New Yorkers and others looking to escape from exactly that sort of bustle. The countryside of the North Fork is expansive and lush, the farmstands bursting with freshness, the beaches gorgeous and not so crowded, and the region is best known for the wineries, producing wines that have attracted the attention of sommeliers across the country and the world.
For dinner, the OC dined at the nearby North Fork Table & Inn for an extraordinary meal, that included locally grown organic produce and fresh seafood paired with award winning, locally grown wine.
The North Fork of Long Island is a destination not to be missed and the South Harbor Inn is the perfect place to spend a weekend getting into it all while you get away from it all.
