6. L’Etoile

Location: 1 S Pinckney Street, Madison, WI 53703

Overview: Once the crown jewel of Madison’s fine dining, L’Etoile is still a significant part of the city’s culinary heritage. However, its sparkle has dimmed in recent years, with the departure of key talent like the Fairchild team or legendary waiter Frank.

What We Love: While L’Etoile remains a top-tier dining experience, the innovation and magic of earlier days have waned. It’s a great option for a formal night out but feels in need of a reboot and reimagination to reclaim its former glory, which was started by Odessa Piper in 1976. The wine program remains the best in Madison, thanks to Michael Kwas.

7. Sardine

Location: 617 Williamson Street, Madison, WI 53703

Overview: Sardine combines French bistro vibes with breathtaking lakeside views. It’s a timeless spot for brunch or dinner, particularly for those who appreciate ambiance.

What We Love: The views of Lake Monona are stunning, and the Mussels & Frites remain a menu highlight. Sardine’s charm lies in its consistency, even if the food doesn’t push the boundaries of creativity.

8. Muramoto Hilldale

Location: Hilldale Mall, Madison WI

Overview: For sushi lovers, Muramoto offers the best in Madison, with fresh fish and imaginative rolls. It’s a standout in a city that doesn’t typically excel in sushi.

What We Love: Signature dishes like the Spicy Tuna Roll and the Nigiri Sampler never disappoint. It’s a hip, sleek venue that delivers on quality, service and flavor.

9. Paoli Schoolhouse (Paoli)

Location: 5441 County Road PB, Paoli, WI 53508

Overview: Located just a short drive from Madison, this converted schoolhouse is a quaint destination for rustic yet refined dining.

What We Love: The charm of dining in a historic setting paired with thoughtfully prepared dishes makes the Schoolhouse a hidden gem. The Pork Chop and the Trout are standout menu items, along with their smokey Old Fashioned, all served by an attentive staff.

10. Water Street Tavern (Stoughton)

Location: 324 South Water Street, Stoughton WI

Overview: On the edge of the Yahara River, this new Stoughton destination offers old school supper club vibes in a cozy atmosphere with vintage flair. It’s worth the trip for a relaxed evening out, while ending the evening with a creative treasure from the Art-o-Mat.

What We Love: Their supper club menu, featuring ribeye steaks, fried perch, and chicken cordon bleu, offers delicious choices. For an appetizer, the fried calamari is a must-try. When spring and summer arrive, celebrate with a cold beer and a tavern burger on the outdoor patio, complete with waterfront views.

What about…?

  • Mark Mint: A destination spot with disappointing food and little personality in its new location. Service and cocktails were fantastic, but the food was a mystery.
  • Bar Corallini: Promising, but often misses the mark with lackluster service (perhaps it was an off-night?). Nice neighborhood vibe.
  • Pig in a Fur Coat: Maybe it’s a Willy Street thing. We felt cramped during our visit, and the staff seemed uninterested. I’ll give it another try.
  • Graze: Offers an uninspired take on farm-to-table dining. Food and service can be uneven. Features the best views of the Capitol. A great spot to take out-of-towners from Fondy who are easily impressed with a fancy burger and a cold Spotted Cow.
  • The Nook: Haven’t tried it yet. Heard good things from reliable sources. It’s on the list!
  • Batch Bakehouse: Best bakery in Madison, featuring authentic French croissants, baguettes, and much more.
  • Morris Ramen: Alas, Morris Ramen would still be in our top five if they hadn’t decided to close up shop. Hands down, Morris had the best ramen in town, alongside their tasty pork buns. The service was always eclectic, but the food never missed the mark. Sadly, you’ll need to visit Chicago now for decent ramen. Thanks to Francesca Hong and Matt Morris for the noodle-filled memories.
  • Forequarter and Underground Butcher: Both were past favorites. Unfortunately, Jonny Hunter imploded.
  • Culver’s: does not have the best cheese curds in town. C’mon!
  • Pizza: Madison has yet to produce a truly world-class pizza spot, though locals seem content with the status quo. Madisonian’s love their pizza, no matter where it’s from—Pizza Pit, Grampa’s Pizzeria, or Ian’s Pizza. Even the much-loved Salvatore’s Tomato Pies is debatable. A friend told me his favorite pizza place was still Rocky Rococo. Nuff said.

Yeah, well, that’s just like, your opinion, man.

True. Support your local restaurants, and explore new destinations. Try new things and give the staff a nice fat tip.

Pursuitist Concludes

Madison’s culinary landscape is a mix of hits and misses, but the best spots truly shine. Fairchild, Ahan, The Harvey House, Bandit, and Heritage Tavern exemplify what makes this city’s dining scene special. Whether you’re in the mood for fine dining, tacos, or a nostalgic supper club experience, these establishments won’t disappoint. For an extended adventure, the Schoolhouse in Paoli and Water Street Tavern in Stoughton are worth the drive.

Madison may not have the perfect pizza or ramen spot, but its hidden gems and innovative chefs make it a city worth exploring for food lovers.
