Land Rover has chosen New York rather than Geneva to launch its next new car, the Range Rover Sport, and is offering fans the chance to watch a special launch event which sees the SUV driven through the streets of New York live via a dedicated microsite.

The existing Range Rover Sport, launched in 2005, is the best-selling Land Rover model in the US and the company claims that it sells more examples in New York than in any other metropolitan area of the world. Therefore, parading the new car through the streets of the city on March 26, on the eve of the 2013 New York Motor Show, seems only appropriate.

Land Rover has set up a dedicated microsite for the event at www.newrangeroversport.com so that Range Rover Sport fans can register and receive a personal invitation to watch the event unfold. Visitors will also receive exclusive information and content.

There had been some concerns that when Ford sold the UK-based company that it would struggle to compete in terms of research and development and technical innovation with its closest rivals — BMW, Mercedes and Audi. However, Land Rover seems to have flourished since India’s Tata took control five years ago.

The Range Rover Evoque is the class-defining small luxury SUV and the latest Range Rover, officially unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in September 2012, has reset the bar in terms of on-road comfort and off-road superiority.

By re-establishing benchmarks so thoroughly, the new Sport has a lot to live up to. The original featured the right balance of speed and four-wheel-drive performance, however, it was built from existing parts and technology rather than on a dedicated platform. More will be needed this time around if it is to compete with the Porsche Cayenne or BMW X5.
