Surrounded by luscious trees in Vancouver’s historical Dunbar-Southlands neighborhood, the Southlands Residence reflects this vivid environment by reinterpreting colors and textures within the comforting spaces. Using remains of an old house, architects of DIALOG designed an original collection of interiors the owner can be proud of: “While remnants of original footings and columns remain, the Southlands Residence reinterprets the competing notions of privacy and exposure facing the well-traveled location. This is done in part through the use of concrete walls in the landscape, meticulous interior mill-work objects, and substantial feature skylights. “
The irregular terrain is divided by a year-round fresh water stream, creating the perfect water whisper soundtrack for a relaxed lifestyle. Captured in a lush basin, water reflects the volumetric architecture and extensive use of glass that transforms the house into a beacon of light at night. Outdoors, natural and man-made intertwine in an inspiring setting: “Access to the private outdoor environment is provided on the north side of the house through an integrated garden storage and potting area. A concrete path crosses over the slow moving water and threads south under the sculpted wooden belly of the house. Where previously the landscape had bounded interior volumes, the building skin now frames entry into the luscious outdoor realm.”
