Located in Vancouver, Canada, the Shaw House looks like a contemporary residence from the outside, but those lucky enough to enter have a big surprise coming their way. This home has an incredible feature that definitely puts it in the lead for a dream swimming pool – just above the entrance, a lap pool captured in between terraces offers views of the water and uses the reflected light as a dynamic texture for surrounding walls. This pool runs along the entire west side of the house.
Vancouver-based Patkau Architects designed the 3,067 contemporary residence for a single person and customized it to the owner’s needs and wishes. The living spaces are located on the first level, with the music room underneath and a a single bedroom, study, and lap pool above. The waterfront property overlooks the skyline of downtown Vancouver and distant mountains, and the narrow property challenged the architects to come up with solutions like high ceilings to enlarge the narrow space or the lap pool filtering natural light. Resulting in a beautiful modern home, this single person residence displays an exemplary set of living and architectural solutions.
