Johannesburg-based studio Nico Van Der Meulen Architects amaze us again with an unbelievable residential construction – the Glass House. Spreading over a colossal 2500 square meter floor plan, this astonishing two story home in Johannesburg, South Africa, gathers panoramas of the garden from many vantage points. Glazed surfaces allow the contemporary interiors to be flooded with natural light.
A raised water feature welcomes owners and guests to the horseshoe-shaped house, hinting towards the luxurious details found inside. One of the most impressive features is a stainless steel and glass staircase suspended over a heated pond. Surprising architectural elements and details alongside the extensive use of glass and timber create a stunning collection of rooms. Social spaces like the dining room, family room, kitchen or lanai were designed to be welcoming and glamorous, to capture the mind of everyone who ever sets foot in this majestic residence. An indoor pool and a gym challenge owners to live a dynamic life, while the private spaces offer the necessary comfort and privacy. This dream home has so many impressive features, that only living there can evoke the clarity needed to describe them:
“You can jump from the main bedroom into the pool, swim to the gym, swim back and use the steel spiral staircase to go back to the main bedroom , or tip a tipsy friend into the pool from his barstool!”
