Built on a 20-acre property along California’s Palos Verdes Peninsula, this contemporary residence was designed to encompass memories and a brand new lifestyle for its inhabitants. Named the Altamira Residence, this intriguing new home reminds the family of childhood camping trips, family picnics, and romantic times spent on these grounds by the couple now owning the land.
Designed by Marmol Radziner, the single family house occupies 15,500 square feet and is divided in four volumes, each of them having a specific function – main living volume, study space, guest house and garage. The main living volume was partially buried in the site and the garage was built under, in order to reduce the disturbance to the site and also allow neighbors to enjoy views of the ocean. The strong and successful collaboration between client, architect and landscape designer resulted in the creation of a complete residential space, merging indoor and outdoor in a fascinating expression of modern architecture.
