Rumors love Apple. At times, we just ignore the static. But we were intrigued by this latest tidbit, courtesy of Bloomberg, which says that the folks at Cupertino are planning on releasing a curved screen iPhone in the second half of 2014. The phone would be available in two display sizes – 4.7-inches and 5.5-inches. The screens would curve downward at the edge.
The screens would also be pressure-sensitive, and thus be able to distinguish between heavy and light presses. This could offer some interesting options to developers. A music app could potentially understand what kind of pressure to apply to a key that is played. Or in game play, how hard or light you tap the screen could determine what action takes place. Ultimately, the pressure sensitive screen could be a bigger innovation than any curved screen.
Last month, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Round with 5.7-inch curved display. It’s still to be determined if the curved display offers a truly attractive alternative for consumers.
