Presented at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile Milan 2011, these exquisite pendant lights feature luxurious materials and a bold, contemporary design. The three elements of the Animal:Mineral series feature interesting materials like: iridescent peacock pelt, wild stallion horsehair and man-made “sable” from iron dust and powdered sugar.
Animal:Mineral by Valerie Dekeyser makes the delight of those enchanted by a mix of simplistic design and creative choice of material. Embraced by a sleek steel silhouette, each pendant light describes a unique combination. The beautiful and elegant trio captures the attention with its subtle lines and sleek silk ribbon cord.
The designer ensures us that the high texture materials used came from humane sources: “When looking for horsehair, I discovered that wild horses are being slaughtered at an alarming rate within the US. The horsehair that I use is from happy healthy horses and I now support organizations such as Save Americas Mustangs who are fighting to keep them alive. When researching where to get feathers, I contacted renowned bird taxidermist, Patrick Rummans, who was masterful in helping to create the piece. The peacock that I used died of natural cause; raised in an avian sanctuary, he had lived a full and fine little bird life.” The fur decorating the last piece is an unusual mixture – the designer created her own “man-made” fur by mixing iron dust and powdered sugar. I believe that the “fake fur” pendant light is the most enticing design, mixing concepts and inspiration to compose an innovative pendant light.
