brian corbett inspirato Summer vacation season is upon us, and we’re ready to leave our desks behind and head to the beach. And, thanks to last-minute booking sites, it’s easier than ever to grab a summer rental with very little advance notice. But is that “beachview” property really the luxury listing it promises?

We spoke with Brian Corbett, Chief Experience Officer and co-founder of Inspirato by American Express, the world’s largest destination club, asking him to share his top tips for making sure that your rental is a big hit, not a bust.

Depending on your rental needs, be prepared to ask about on-property amenities, such as a pool (Is it heated? Does it have adequate outdoor seating?) and a barbecue (Is it professionally cleaned before each visit? Does it use propane or charcoal, and is that provided?).

If a problem does arise — and hopefully it does not — how will issues be handled, particularly over a holiday weekend? Is ongoing maintenance, such as pool cleaning and housekeeping, scheduled during your visit?

You may also wish to inquire about the neighborhood and local area’s ordinances, such as noise restrictions.

Owners and managers can be valuable sources of advice for nearby amenities such as golf courses, Corbett explains, and some rental owners and clubs, such as Inspirato, offer access that renters normally couldn’t obtain on their own.

Even though many rentals are available online, don’t pass up the opportunity to speak with the property manager or owner via phone if possible, Corbett cautions. Many questions can be cleared up in a quick conversation.

Now, with these tips in hand, get ready to have your best summer rental ever.
