After ten years of fundraisers, design competitions, and speculation about real estate values, The Highline, a 1.45 mile railway that ran along Manhattan’s westside until 1980 has opened as a public park. The Diller Scofidio + Renfro-design atop the once desolate structure, hosted an opening gala on Monday that boasted $1,000 base-price tickets, the proceeds of which went to Friends of the Highline—yes, the project is still hungry for more cash.
