As a couple plans to make two lives one, there is often the question of what stays and what goes. In the case of Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez, it looks like of Rodriguez’s art collection didn’t make the stay list.
Phillips Auctions is selling off two pieces from the baseball star’s private collection in London on June 27. The two works Richard Prince’s Mustang Painting, 2014-16, and Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Pink Elephant with Fire Engine, 1984 were previously diplayed in his Florida home.
Alex Rodriguez has said, “I have been collecting for a decade. A number of gallerists and advisors pointed me in the right direction, and I have been in conversation with several artists, whose studio practice seem close to my own as an athlete.”
Robert Manley, Phillips’ Worldwide Co-Head of 20th Century & Contemporary Art, said, “Alex Rodriguez has solidified his reputation as one of the greatest athletes in American history, but one important aspect of his life that is far less well-known to the public is his life as a collector of contemporary art. Over the last ten years, since he began his collecting journey, Alex has acquired an exceptional collection of works, featuring some of the art scene’s most coveted names, and we are honored to have been entrusted with the sale of these two extraordinary paintings.”
Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Pink Elephant with Fire Engine is estimated to sell for as much as £3-£4 million while Mustang Paint is estimated at £700,000 – £1,000,000.
This sale marks the first time that both Richard Prince’s Mustang Painting and Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Pink Elephant with Fire Engine are being offered for sale publicly.
