For anyone trekking to the Florida Keys, the first ‘to do’ you should add to your list is to stop at Mrs. Mac’s Kitchen in Key Largo and partake in some of the best Key Lime Pie you’ll ever experience.
To say Mrs. Mac’s is quirky is a vast understatement. The somewhat ramshackle, tacky looking building oozes with character, especially on the inside.
Like most anyplace in the Keys, casual is the name of the game at Mrs. Mac’s. Come to have fun. Kids will love the atmosphere. There are thousands of license plates on the walls, and a great game is to have the kids find one from every state.
The staff and the food at Mrs. Mac’s is first rate. It’s reasonably priced and portions are fairly large. We very much recommend whatever seafood is in season. But while the food and the staff are great, and atmosphere first rate, the best part of Mrs. Mac’s Kitchen is their famous Key Lime Pie. While there are dozens (maybe hundreds) of places in the Keys that claim to have the best Key lime pie, Mrs. Mac’s delivers the goods.
Their Key Lime Pie is served cold. The texture is smooth and refreshing. The taste is a superb mixture – creamy and sweet, but not overly so, with a nice sharp tang that forces you to stop and enjoy each bite. The graham cracker crust is perfect – not too dense but not so crumbly that it falls apart. It is pure heaven.
Mrs. Mac’s Key Lime Freeze is a great alternative if you or your children don’t want pie. It’s almost as good as the Key Lime Pie (but not quite).
Mrs. Mac’s Kitchen is located right on Hwy 1 in Key Largo. It’s a can’t miss stop as you head down the Keys – and a perfect place to stop off as you leave.
