Globally recognized architect and photographer Douglas Busch (Busch Design Build) has earned a reputation for his ability to conceptualize and form organic designs that facilitate an often dynamic synergy with the environment. Busch’s style is on fully display in the Trancas Canyons area of Malibu, California, where one of his constructs, an industrial yet serene hilltop compound, is currently listed for $7.999 million.
Built using sustainable materials – concrete, glass and steel – the property features a 4,275-square-foot main house that is built to conform to the existing landscape and overlooks a pair of detached guest suites. The main home is split between three levels with the third story resting at the highest point of the property, resulting in unobstructed views of the surrounding canyons, mountains and ocean. The first-level carport and storage area connects to the rest of the home via an elevator, while the bulk of the home’s amenities – media room, gym, zen garden, etc. – are situated on the second floor. Much of the living accommodations are found on the third level, including the master bedroom, kitchen, living room and formal dining area, along with a stairwell to access a pair of rooftop gardens. The master suite, clad in walnut flooring, boasts a retractable skylight that allows for the possibility of sleeping under the stars, while the master bath features a massive sit-down shower with a screened window.
Outside, a 110,000-gallon salt water infinity pool (the third largest private swimming pool in Los Angeles) stretches out towards the Pacific Ocean. Adjacent to the pool is a private sauna, dining terrace and a kitchen that rests under a cabana. And if those features weren’t enough, adding to the relaxed nature of the compound is a Koi and turtle pond with underwater fountains that joins the guest suites to the rest of the home by way of a stone bridge.
