Steve McQueen, who is better known as Hollywood’s king of cool, was passionate about his Ford GT40, featured in the 1971 racing classic movie named Le Mans. The film actually presented the best of auto racing depicted on the silver screen and that is why the 1968 Ford GT40 means a lot to all auto aficionados. At Pebble Beach Auction, the car has become the most expensive American car going under the hammer for a record $11 million.
A simple Ford GT40 can be availed in the market for an estimated price of $100,000 but this one is surely exceptional at it was restored after being featured in the movie to make it presentable for the auction. It has a supercharged V8 engine with aluminum heads and block and also a port fuel injection. The eight cylinder engine produces 500 bhp and displays torque of 500 lb-ft. The two door coupe accommodates two passengers and can reach from 0 to 60 mph in just 4 seconds. The speed enthusiasts can reach up to 185 mph with this wonderful car as that marks its top driving speed. The name buyer, however, is unknown, but with so much of glamour and history associated to it, this 1968 Ford GT40 is certainly an expensive collector’s item.
