Robert Downey Jr. has always had a way of anchoring epic adventures. He launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Tony Stark in Iron Man, helped build it into the highest-grossing film franchise of all time, and now returns to the MCU as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. Before that highly anticipated December debut, RDJ is embarking on another grand adventure, this time at sea.
Disney has announced that Academy Award-winning actor Robert Downey Jr. will serve as the official godparent of the Disney Adventure, the newest and largest ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet. The news arrives just ahead of the vessel’s maiden voyage next month from its home port in Singapore.

“Our new ship continues Disney Cruise Line’s tradition of bringing great stories to life at sea, and we are honored that Robert Downey Jr., who has guided audiences through unforgettable Marvel stories, is the official godparent for the Disney Adventure,” said Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences and incoming CEO of The Walt Disney Company.
It is hard to imagine a more fitting choice. Downey’s portrayal of Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man, was the cornerstone of the MCU, culminating in Avengers: Endgame, which grossed more than $2.79 billion worldwide. Named an official Disney Legend in 2019, Downey remains deeply woven into the Disney universe. His upcoming role as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, in theaters December 18, signals yet another chapter in his blockbuster legacy.
“It’s impossible to describe the majesty of the Adventure, and to be its godparent is an honor,” Downey said. “As the largest ship in the Disney fleet, a gargantuan blessing must be bestowed. I’ll do my darndest.”
A Super Hero Experience at Sea
The Disney Adventure delivers more than a century of Disney storytelling across seven immersive themed areas, several with Marvel at the helm.
At Marvel Landing, located on the top decks, guests can experience Tony Stark’s Ironcycle Test Run, the first roller coaster on a Disney Cruise Line ship and the longest of its kind at sea. It is a high-speed thrill designed for true Super Hero status.
In the open-air Disney Imagination Garden, the live stage production “Avengers Assemble!” brings jaw-dropping stunts and cinematic special effects to an action-packed showdown between Marvel’s greatest heroes and villains.
Young recruits can also train inside Disney’s Oceaneer Club, where the Marvel WEB Workshop invites children to test Super Hero suit prototypes and take part in interactive Avengers simulations using top-secret technology.
Elevated Luxury, Disney Style
Beyond its Marvel thrills, the Disney Adventure offers the signature elegance and hospitality the brand is known for:
-
Broadway-caliber entertainment
-
Immersive character encounters
-
Themed staterooms and concierge accommodations
-
More than 20 dining and lounge venues featuring international and Asian-inspired cuisine
As maritime tradition dictates, a ship’s godparent is appointed to bestow blessings and good fortune before its maiden voyage, a centuries-old custom now infused with modern cinematic grandeur. With Downey ceremonially at the helm, the Disney Adventure sets sail not only as the fleet’s largest vessel, but as a symbol of storytelling, spectacle, and star power.
If there is one actor who knows how to launch a universe or a voyage, it is Robert Downey Jr.
