The next Mercedez-Benz Fashion Week is coming in February, and as we learned this week, it will be the last one at Lincoln Center.
A Walk in the Park blog first posted the reason why: The Supreme Court of the State of New York County ruled that Lincoln Center would not renew its sublicense agreement with IMG Fashion. (The sublicense expires in February.)
The Supreme Court’s decision clarifies Lincoln’s Center’s relationship with Damrosch Park, in which Fashion Week events were located. Future changes to or use of the park (which includes event hosting) must now be approved by the Parks Department as well as local community organizations. And because there has been community discontent, NYFW is ultimately being moved to a space that will be called the Culture Shed at Hudson Yards.
But the Culture Shed isn’t scheduled to be finished until 2018.
Uh oh.
So — what’s a Fashion Week to do??!
At least until 2018, a Fashion Week hub zone may be impossible. But we’re betting that’s ok! If the trend continues as in past years, an increasing number of notable designers will hold their presentations in singular venues and large event spaces across the city — like Spring Studios, Milk Studios, and even their own showrooms.
And it’ll spark some creativity. Attendees’ outfits are going to require a complement of running-all-around town shoes.
