Nintendo’s next video game system, code-named NX, is arriving world-wide on March 2017, the Kyoto, Japan-based gaming company has confirmed. The Nintendo NX system will usher in a new generation of 4K gaming capabilities with a “brand-new concept” to enjoy the iconic Nintendo IP franchises, including Mario, Pokemon, Metroid and The Legend of Zelda.
It also announced that Legend of Zelda for Wii U will also move to the March 2017 date, as the title will be released simultaneously on both the Wii U and the NX. Other rumored launched titles for the Nintendo NX include Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 9.
NX is still only the console’s codename for Nintendo’s next, expect to see more details of the gaming system, and the official title, later this year. As a home powered portable/handheld console, the new gaming platform is expected to have cross-platform integration with smartphones, the Nintendo 3DS XL and the Internet. The ability to download and save games across devices is expected, and the Nintendo OS will merge MyNintendo, Mii and Miitomo capabilities. According to our sources, backwards compatibility with past WII U games and peripherals, including the WII U gamepad, will also be a feature of the new console.
Nintendo will not be showing the still unrevealed NX platform at this year’s E3 gaming conference. The features, specs and price of the NX, as well as details about the launch games, will be unveiled later this year.
Below is Nintendo’s annual financial report which describes the Nintendo NX in greater detail:
For our dedicated video game platform business, Nintendo is currently developing a gaming platform codenamed “NX” which is a brand-new concept, and our unique software-led hardware-software integrated business will continue to constitute the core business for Nintendo. For the purpose of maximizing the population that interacts with Nintendo IP, we have entered into the smart device gaming business.
NX will be launched in March 2017 globally. As for amiibo, we will continue to expand the product lineup in order to maintain momentum. At the same time, we will aim to further expand sales by offering new gaming experiences with the use of amino.
We will aim to create a synergetic effect between the smart device business and Nintendo’s dedicated game system business to maximize the Nintendo businesses overall by growing our smart device business so that it is profitable on its own while continuously strengthening our connection with our consumers by enhancing features of our new membership service called My Nintendo.
As for other initiatives to use Nintendo IP actively, we launched a new product called amiibo – Nintendo characters that come in figure or card form that work with our video games. They have been well received by many of our consumers. Furthermore, our endeavors will not be limited to video games. We are planning to offer new attractions at theme parks featuring Nintendo characters. We will also strive to further increase opportunities for consumers to come in contact with Nintendo characters in their daily lives, such as through visual content and merchandising in order to maximize the number of people who come in contact with Nintendo IP.
