Academy award award winner Meryl Streep is in talks to play the title role in “Thatcher,” a biopic of the former British prime minister.
Jim Broadbent would play Margaret Thatcher’s husband, Denis. The film would be directed by Phyllida Lloyd – who helmed the Streep hit “Mamma Mia!’. It would be set in 1982 and follows Thatcher as she tries to save her career in the days before the 1982 Falklands War. The time frame would be crucial for Thatcher, as her popularity swelled in the wake of the war and catapulted her to another term.
Streep has played many real-life women on film, including Karen Silkwood, author Susan Orlean and cooking legend Julia Child.
