In “Thrift Shop” Macklemore sang of taking your grandpa’s style. He’s not the only one. The hottest thing in men’s fashion happens to date back a few decades and its not just vintage, it’s runway fresh. Just ask the editors of GQ’s What To Wear Now guide for Fall. While the popularity of “Mad Men” brought back the classic suit a few years back, this latest version of retro is a bit more flamboyant. The name geezer style implies a certain irreverence and desire to put a new spin on an old look. It asks you to wonder just for a moment before stepping out the door: can I really bull this off?
Call it the new bold. Plaid is back, houndstooth too, and those windowpane check suits from decades past have returned in full force. The topcoat including the chesterfield with its velvet collar makes its triumphant reappearance, worn casually with slim pants or jeans, dress shoes or your favorite sneaks.
Also on the back of style bloggers, that bastion of old man style, the sport coat. Yes, it has returned in all its glory but pepped up when paired with jeans, work boots, and a pair of cool shades. And for 1970s-loving grandpas, here comes the turtleneck and its old partner in crime, the corduroy suit.
The style isn’t about looking like a live version of an old photo, it’s about combining the beloved classics with today’s cuts. So go out there, get loud, and make grandpa proud.
