The first trailer for The Raven starring John Cusack (2012, Being John Malkovich), who portrays Edgar Allen Poe, was released October 9. In the footage for this period crime thriller, the bodies of murdered victims are uncovered by a young inspector detective, who recognizes methods modeled after Poe’s stories, such as “The Pit and the Pendulum” and “The Tell-Tale Heart.”
At first, Poe is under suspicion in connection with the murders, but soon he is pulled into the case to find the serial killer, with the dead offering up clues that Poe’s mind might be able to unravel.
In a twist, Poe’s love Emily is kidnapped and buried alive, as happens in his story “The Cask of Amontillado.” Poe must second-guess his copycat to save her — and vows to kill the killer.
The Raven also features Luke Evans (Clash of the Titans, Robin Hood) and Brendan Gleeson (Harry Potter) and is directed by James McTeigue (V for Vendetta).
The Raven will fly into theaters March 9 in North America.
