One of the greats of golf, Spain’s Seve Ballesteros, has died at age 54, the result of a brain tumor.

Ballesteros burst on to the golf scene in 1976, coming in 2nd at the British Open. He would win the prestigious tournament at age 22, and go on to be one of the leaders in the renaissance of European golf.

Ballesteros was known for his bold and audacious style of golf – bringing a swagger and sex appeal to the links. He would go on to win 5 major titles – including #1 in the world – during his career, and would lead Europe to dominance in the Ryder Cup.

A bad back diminished Ballesteros’ formidable skills, and he retired from the game in 2007 due to lingering problems. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2008.
