Proving once again that the collective works of Frank Lloyd Wright will continue to stand the test of time is the celebrated architect’s Isidore H. Heller House in Chicago, Illinois. The 115-year-old Hyde Park residence, which has made its way onto the market in recent days with a price tag of $2.5 million, is still as stunning as ever – and serves as one of the first examples of Wright’s gradual shifting away from the ideology of his mentor and, Louis Sullivan, an influential architect who many credit as the “father of modernism.”
Built in 1897, the Heller House is noted for its rectangular design, which incorporates Indiana limestone and yellow Roman brick that add to the geometric form of property’s exterior. Inside, the home offers some 6,100-square-feet of living space spread over three floors and 16 rooms, including a total of seven bedrooms and four baths, formal dining room and great room. Rows of spectacular stained glass windows can be found throughout the home, including a prominent grouping that runs parallel to a hand carved oak staircase.
Other features and amenities include a working elevator and four fireplaces; however, perhaps the defining characteristic of the Heller House, as noted by realtor Diane Silverman, is Wright’s use of vaulted ceilings inside the home. “This house has very large rooms with high ceilings, which isn’t always the case with Frank Lloyd Wright houses,” Silverman told The Huffington Post, noting that it represents a stark contrast to another of Wright’s Chicago constructs, the Frederick C. Robie House, which, “has very low ceilings.”
