The Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco, California was recently “enhanced” with 3D rippling fluid walls, designed by Urban A&O in the 10,000 square foot exhibition space entitled The Water Planet. The generous interior accommodates living animals and multimedia information, originally passing on information to the thousands of visitors.
According to the project developers, the fluid forms are “designed to invite touch, which in turn triggers media windows to open on many of the surfaces and create flows of water and steam across them. The surrounding walls, punctuated by sinuous apertures that reveal living habitats behind them, also create a seamless media field with 13 interlinked projections transforms the exhibit space each hour into a full-round theater that can deliver a powerful and entertaining educational program“. The overall feeling that a visitor gets when entering this unusual exhibition space is that of endless dynamics. By actually interacting with the design of the aquarium, the learning process is taken a step forward.
