Open plan living has encouraged owners and designers to look for customized solutions for each space. Instead of adding a staircase, the visual and functional appeal of this element is being embedded in the architecture itself. With this in mind, design and manufacturing English company Bisca set out to create a modern staircase to fit a contemporary home in the South of England.
Staircase designers face challenges in terms of shape, material, texture, color and execution. Each project must become a clever part of the home itself, mirroring or accentuating the surrounding space. This floating staircase design by Bisca combines a cantilevered structure with a glass wall, creating a beautiful see-through solution. The glass wall supports the floating walnut stairs, allowing natural light to flow freely. Glass was also chosen for the balustrade, completing the high level of transparency the owner asked for: “The clients brief was to keep the whole area light and airy with an unobtrusive but elegant staircase.”
