Blink and you might miss it, but we’re pretty sure you’ll hear the buzz about it from near and far.
August 5-7, 2016 the 2nd annual U.S. National Drone Racing Championship takes place on Governor’s Island. Last year’s race wowed in Sacramento last year, but New York takes center stage for the 2015 Cup, which will also be broadcast on ESPN.
The three days of races and freestyle ariel acrobatics are both spectacle and competition, with participation limited to U.S. citizens and permanent residents as the winner will represent Team USA at the new World Championships later this year.
Wearing goggles and wielding videogame-like joysticks, competitors will zoom drones around in this new active artform, with speeds topping 80 mph on devices as small as 40 inches in wingspan.
There’s still time to enter… or plan to attend simply to watch in wonder.
Drone Racing: the future sure got here fast.
