By creating a sculptural family home on a 250 square meter plot in Malta, Chris Briffa Architects extended their creativity on the inhabitants’ day to day life. The residence known now as the Hanging Home is a simple and elegant white cube hanging above a narrow side-garden. Built for a family of three who needed an open floor living space, two bedrooms with bathrooms, a home office, a study, a three-car-garage, a pool and a garden, this dream home complies with all requests exemplary.
In order to design this family’s dream home and comply to strict building regulations, architects cantilevered half of the house over the pool. This maximizes the garden area and offers a contemporary design solution enhanced by customized interiors. Greeted by a steel staircase leading over the front garden to the door, family and guests feel that there is more to this home than meets the eye at first sight and they are right.
“The long living area – a double-height volume attached to a low one – accommodates the piano salon (with enhanced acoustics thanks to its high ceiling), the sitting room, concealed stairs to the garage and the sunny kitchen/breakfast area. The dining room and guest WC are each hidden behind a composition of oak doors and storage cabinets, which also hides the vertical services and cooling system. (…) The dining room extends into the garden on a cantilevered concrete slab enclosed by three glass walls; hovering above the deep end of the pool surrounded by south-facing olive trees. (…) Perhaps the most interesting (and the architect’s favourite) internal space, this peculiar home-office is partly underground, sharing a wall with the pool while looking up to the olive trees and the cantilevered dining slab.”
