Carine Roitfeld, better known as former editor-in-chief of Vogue Paris, is the protagonist of fashion documentary ‘Mademoiselle C’. After heralding French Vogue for 10 years, she has moved on to become the founder and editor-in-chief of CR Fashion Book.
The fashion documentary, which premiered in New York on Sept. 6, is all about the nine important months in Roitfeld’s life as she debuted her own publication. The movie lets the world peep inside the former model’s personal as well as professional life. It revolves around her evolution, moving from Paris to New York to launch her own magazine.
Since her life circled around models, celebrities, and personalities from the fashion world, the documentary predominantly features icons like Donatella Versace, Tom Ford, Karl Lagerfeld, Kanye West, Sarah Jessica Parker and others.
Directed by Fabien Constant, the film features Roitfeld chatting with Donatella Versace along with other scenes of moments spent with Diane von Furstenberg, Riccardo Tisci and Alexander Wang. Viewers can also watch Lagerfeld kidding around with his godson, four-year-old Hudson Kroenig and later with Roitfeld’s newborn granddaughter Romy in her stroller. Tom Ford idolizes the 59 year old mademoiselle, quoting, “I’m better when I work with Carine. Most people are better when they work with Carine.”
The legendary diva opens up about her uncomfortable experience of facing the camera too, “To see yourself on the big screen, you’re big, you hate your voice, your vocabulary. You say the same words, you speak bad. They say you forget, but they are wrong — you never forget. It was quite difficult. It was four months, a long time.” She also admitted that, “I did not realize it was going to be so personal. I realized, it’s always mixed — family, love, friends — it’s always like that. It is a real reflection of my life. Some are going to be surprised when they see me not in high heels and skirts, but in jeans. You can see me vulnerable and stressed — it’s the real me, the good and the bad.”
She also shares about the demands of her kind of work, “It looks easy when you make a picture, but there’s a lot of reflection before — the what, the why — everything has a reason.”
