Bunnahabhain is a village on the northeast of coast of the island of Islay, Scotland.
Some Islay whiskey can have a heavy, smokey peat-derived flavor. Bunnahabhain, however, is quite light on the peat.
The 18 year Bunnahabhain was re-introduced a few years ago, and it’s a wonderful, winning formula.
A first whiff of Bunnahabhain 18-year brings a slight odor of the aforementioned smoke and ash and peat. But also hints of fruit and a slight sweetness.
On to the taste. It’s a slightly oily, thick Scotch. The malt is full of oak, honey, sherry and a rich toffee. The combination is, quite simply, great.
The finish is thick and solid with a nice aftertaste.
The Bunnahabhain 18 year old Islay Scotch is a soft, rich spirit – easily savored and well worth a visit.
A bottle will cost you around $80-90.
