After a successful run at Elle, publisher Carol Smith has left Hachette Filipacchi for Conde Nast — to become VP and publishing director for Bon Appetit and the Gourmet brand. Carol succeeds Paul Jowdy, who had been VP-publisher at Bon Appetit since 2006. Paul is remaining with Conde Nast, reporting to Caron, in the new post of executive director for sales at Bon App and Gourmet. Here’s Carol’s welcome email to advertisers:

Please accept this email as a warm hello from a newcomer to your neighborhood.

As some of you may know, I recently left ELLE after nine years to become Publishing Director of the Bon Appétit and Gourmet brands.

Before ELLE I helped found Parenting magazine and worked there for many years, so it’s been a rather strange trajectory, from Pampers to Prada to pot-au-feu.

But perhaps this latest shift isn’t really all that strange. After all, in the past couple of decades food has taken on more and more of the trappings of fashion-its subtlety, its panache, the increasing interest in its being created at the highest level and it’s the only commodity whose importance to human beings exceeds that of clothes.

In any event, I’m greatly looking forward to getting to know you all (and possibly even to overcoming my infantile aversion to mushrooms).

With every good wish,

Carol
