A new adventurous outdoor travel experience is crossing the pond. Americans will soon have the opportunity to partake in Bear Grylls Survival Academy, a thrill-seeking activity, pioneered by the longtime star of Man vs. Wild. Bear Grylls Survival Academy is a survival course for individuals as well as families (only children 10 and older).
The Bear Grylls Survival Academy, which launched in Scotland and the United Kingdom, is expanding its program’s borders for the summer of 2014, with dates and locations for survival training and skill-application available starting May and June. The program will be launched at Frost Valley in the Catskills of New York, Glacier View Ranch in Ward, Colorado and Yosemite National Park in California with three different courses to choose from: 24-hour adult courses, 24-hour family courses and the five-day adult intensive course.
Program applicants who meet certain standards of physical fitness will be trained in skills such as fire building, daytime and nighttime navigation, hunting for food and water acquisition, shelter construction, and first aid, among other skills. A fourth location, in Texas, will be announced soon.
For the five-day course, participants will be instructed over a period of three days, after which they will be left without guides with only one another to trek from an unknown remote location through varied terrain including mountain sides, gorges, rugged cliffs, craggy outcrops and fast moving white water in order to find their way back to base camp.
Over the past year this Scotland-originated adventure travel trend has picked up speed and gained momentum with risk-takers from across the globe. Countless adventure fanatics have journeyed to the various course locations of Bear Grylls Survival Academy (BGSA) in England, Scotland, Wales and Africa.
Applicants who successfully complete a course are considered survivalists with the necessary skills to “rough it” in any wilderness environment. They are also awarded the coveted Bear Grylls Survival Academy badge and certificate, and survival essentials—a Bear Grylls Ultimate knife, rucksack and head torch.
