High above the Maasai Mara on the very site where some of the most romantic scenes from Out of Africa were filmed, the now open luxury resort Angama Mara is easily Kenya’s most anticipated opening of the year.
The resort, composed of two intimate camps of just 15 tented suites each, is located on the edge of the Oloololo Escarpment, one of the area’s most sought-after locations. At the lodge’s Pavilion, set between the two camps, lies a fitness center, a 40-foot-long swimming pool, a curated gallery of African art, clothing and jewelry, and a sun-filled studio where local Maasai women work at beading bespoke items.
The lodge, helmed by renowned industry leaders Steve and Nicky Fitzgerald (formerly of &Beyond), boasts excellent year-round game viewing in the Mara Triangle. A special highlight? Guests access the reserve via a private track where they can witness one of the continent’s most dramatic events, a Mara River crossing. Inspired by the Swahili word for ‘suspended in mid-air,’ Angama Mara seems to float 1,000 feet above the Great Rift Valley where, every morning, hot air balloons sail past the 30-foot-wide floor-to-ceiling glass fronts of each tented suite.
All-inclusive per person rates start at $750 per night.
