Alice Waters, the culinary equivalent of Mother Nature, is kicking up quite a media storm in advance of Chez Panisse’s 40th anniversary with her latest collaboration involving Levi’s.
Waters, who is widely credited for launching the locavore movement when she opened her Berkeley, California restaurant Chez Panisse in 1971, has struck a partnership with the clothing company which will sell limited edition T-shirts to support another project she pioneered, The Edible Schoolyard.
Friends of the venture — a national organization that teaches kids to connect with and grow their own food within the school system — include writer Dave Eggers, director Sofia Coppola, Talking Heads musician David Byrne and children’s author Maira Kalman.
The artists have designed organic cotton T-shirts and are now available in select Levi’s stores across the US for a limited time. All proceeds will support The Edible Schoolyard. Shirts are $30 and letterpressed hang-tags on handmade paper are embedded with organic seeds.
