Iconic travel-trailer maker Airstream has announced production of the top-of-the-line Land Yacht Trailer. First introduced last fall as a concept, the design of the luxurious trailer is an international collaboration between Italian company Tecnoform S.p.A., and the design studio of Officinia Italiana Design. It was designed in partnership with Mauro Micheli, the long-time designer for Riva Yachts and has the looks of a plush yacht with interior elements such as boat-deck flooring, LED panel lighting elements, Corian® solid surfaces and rich Italian fabrics. The 28’ Airstream Land Yacht has sleeping room for up to five people, including a bedroom in the front, a bathroom in the middle and a rear social space with a galley that can be hidden when not in use. A powered bed lift reveals access to hidden storage and there is also a power patio awning and powered table pedestal. A quiet ducted air system provides air conditioning to make sure the occupants are perfectly comfortable no matter where they roam.
Airsstream’s founder Wally Byam’s love for boats drove him to create a parallel experience for adventure travel on land. Airstream’s early models had nautical names including Clipper, Liner, Wee Wind and the Flying Cloud. In Byam’s later years, he designed and commissioned a custom sailing yacht called the Caravan, but never had the chance to pilot the ship around the world as planned.
Airsteam CEO Bob Wheeler sees the Land Yacht as more than just an RV: “We believe the Land Yacht provides the brand with a chance to reach beyond the traditional RV channels, and attract a buyer that may have other uses in mind, like a studio, office, or lounge.”
Land Yacht production will commence in July and pricing starts at $140,000.
