Nobody defines versatility better than Karl Lagerfeld. Multi-talented German fashion designer, who plays the role of the head designer and creative director at Chanel as well as Fendi, is all set to star in a four hour-long documentary which compares fashion to religion. Directed by television journalist Martina Neuenm the film, dubbed Mode Als Relgion, depicts Karl as the supreme leader of the industry.
Touting Mr. Lagerfeld as the Pope of fashion universe, Martina Neuen has equated fashion magazines to the Bible, models to angels and consumers to followers.
For over 16 months, the journalist was permitted to accompany Karl on his daily routine of fashion shows and photography. She had also enlisted German neurologist Christian Elger to establish that the brains of a Catholic priest and the workaholic designer had the same emotional response when faced with their respective ‘religions’.
The Karl-starred documentary is certainly not going be free of hullabaloo. However it is also trimmed with interviews with fashion divas like Claudia Schiffer, Linda Evangelista, Suzy Menkes and Sarah Jessica Parker.
The man who brags of himself as a fashion missionary quotes, “The only pope I thought was chic was Pius XII. Even though he may not be remembered for his popularity, I thought he was elegant. And Pope John XXIII was the most charismatic; you can keep all the others.”
