W magazine has crowned a dozen women as the new Royals. Questioning the identity of royalty in this day and age, the magazine has rounded up twelve noteworthy women from the worlds of society, fashion, and show business, and divided them into new and classic royalty—a distinction based on time spent in the spotlight, more than anything else. American fashion magazine has just released five different covers for its October issue, each featuring a woman dubbed one of “The New Royals”.
Paying homage to the legendary Joan Rivers, who passed away this month at the age of 81, the oversized fashion glossy has crowned her as the Classic Royalty from the world of Comedy. She is looked upon for having the sheer nerve to initiate stand-up comedy fifty years back.
Supermodels are a dime and dozen but none has ruled with more authority than Naomi Campbell. The stunning British model held on to her crown with her arresting personality. Speaking about the change in the times, like a veteran, Naomi quotes, “I don’t understand the new girls now. Fashion has really changed—it went from being a small group to very global and very corporate. Back in the day, we got to know the designers personally, and we tried to reinforce their vision. The new girls don’t have that anymore; they are merely skinny clothes hangers. I like a little swag in a girl’s walk on the runway. It is called a ‘show,’ after all.”
Another Royal listed by W mag from the fashion universe is the current day supermodel Cara Delevingne. The diva is all over the industry as a model, designer, actress and much more. She has revealed a bit about her childhood in the interview, stating, “As a child, I loved being naked….. Nudity was liberation to me. Freedom.” We got the point that Cara is just born with it!
Other celebratory women who made it to the list of New Royals include Kiernan Shipka, Charlotte Casiraghi, Stella McCartney, Kristen Wiig, Carolina Herrera, Jaclyn Smith, Ellen Page, Anjelica Huston and Kendra Spears. The magazine claims that the women in this issue share a rare combination of strength, charisma, and character. They have made it to the list as they have all achieved something difficult and remarkable on their own terms, and none of them is ready to quit anytime soon.
The covers of the W magazine’s October issue are lensed by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin and styled by Edward Enninful.
