While most African safaris allow adventurers the chance to see animals from a relative distance, Baobab Expeditions—a leader in adventure expeditions throughout Africa’s remote and tribal areas—is taking exploration a step further with a private gorilla and rhinoceros trekking safari through Rwanda and Kenya for a closer observation. Offered in June and November 2010, the 10-day excursion is led by Dr. Clare Richardson, a leading authority in gorilla research and president of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International. She will escort the group to the Karisoke Research Center in Rwanda, the only gorilla research center in the world. The Kenyan leg of the trip will be led by Lynne Leakey, a safari guide with 30 years of experience trekking in Kenya (and daughter-in-law of Louis Leakey). The two guides will offer 12 guests the opportunity to stay in some of Africa’s chicest safari lodges, including Virunga Lodge in Rwanda and Kenya’s Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge, both of which feature stunning views, world-class cuisine, and spacious rooms—and are ideally located near the trekking grounds the gorillas and rhinos call home. Mountain Gorillas and the Big Five (a common safari term that identifies the lion, buffalo, leopard, elephant and rhino) expeditions start at $9,590 per person, and are limited to 12 people. – From Robb Report
