Tina Brown’s Daily Beast to merge with Newsweek

The Daily Beast Web site and Newsweek magazine will announce Friday that they are joining to form a new company that will give the ailing newsmagazine some new-media energy and the the fledgling Web site a modicum of old-media credibility, according to people with knowledge of the agreement. The combined entity will be under the editorial direction of the Daily Beast’s editor, Tina Brown, who was the top editor at Vanity Fair, the New Yorker and the defunct Talk magazine, as well as a columnist for The Washington Post’s Style section. – from WashPo

Newsweek and The Daily Beast will announce their much-speculated merger on Friday morning, according to a report by former Newsweek senior reporter-turned-New York Observer media reporter Nick Summers. The new publication will be a 50-50 merger and the editorial staffs will combine, Summers reported late Thursday on the Observer’s website.
