Mercedes-Benz AMG GT S set to hit U.S. in spring 2015
Not willing to cede the two-seat sports car market to Porsche, Lamborghini and Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and their AMG division have teamed up to create a new top of the line performance machine with up to 503 hp that goes from 0-60 in 3.7 seconds and is capable of reaching a top speed of 193 mph. And as evidenced by this video, it’s clearly track ready.
The new AMG GTS features an all new 4.0L twin-turbo V8 engine. There are two unique features of this powerplant. First, its dry-sump design allows it to be mounted lower in the frame lowering the car’s center of gravity which improves handling. Second, the turbochargers are mounted inside the engine’s V instead of the traditional configuration which improves performance by increasing airflow.
In addition to power, the engineers at M-B have also worked to reduce weight, constructing the frame out of 90% aluminum and other lightweight materials. This was achieved without compromising chassis rigidity thus creating an excellent platform for the double wishbone suspension.
Inside the new AMG GT S presents itself as a serious sports car with race-inspired seats and an instrument cluster that first and foremost focuses on imparting key performance data to the driver.
Pricing has yet to be announced and we’ll wait to pass final judgment until we can spend some time behind the wheel. The AMG GT S, however, promises to offer formidable competition to some of our favorite cars in this category and we’re looking forward to finding out in person.
