“The Great Gatsby” parade is officially in full force, with a few events this week kicking off the movie premiering May 10. To start, Prada feted its collaboration with Gatsby through the opening of a movie-themed exhibit at its downtown store, which eventually will travel to Tokyo and Shanghai. Creative director Miuccia Prada collaborated with Gatsby costume designer Catherine Martin for the movie, which provided 40 looks for the two scenes in the motion picture. The exhibit’s debut May 1 kicked off with a huge party the night before attended by thousands of people and included celebrities such as Carey Mulligan, Katy Perry, Baz Luhrmann, Maggie Gyllenhal, Florench Welch, Toby Maguire and Isla Fisher.
Along those lines, Gatsby itself premiered at Lincoln Center in New York on Wednesday. The event was sponsored by Tiffany & Co., another brand with a hand in the movie. Designer Ms. Martin collaborated with Tiffany, which created a collection precisely for the film that was inspired by its archives from the 1920s.
Meanwhile, Baselworld wrapped up in Basel, Switzerland this week. Most brands introduced new watch, accessory or jewelry concepts, such as Chopard’s “For You” high jewelry collection and Versace’s Venus collection (in tandem with its to-be-launched Venus clothing line). Other impressive announcements from high-end brands include Hublot headphones, in collaboration with Monster; Breitling’s Emergency II timepiece featuring an emergency transmitter; and Bulgari Roma, a product inspired by ancient Roman coins.
