Sotheby’s auctioned a “perfect” 100-carat diamond for $22.1 million, making it the most expensive colorless diamond ever auctioned in New York.The extremely rare 100.20-carat perfect diamond is as much a masterpiece of human skill and artistry as it is a miracle of nature. Holding in everything one could ever want in a diamond, the Ultimate Emerald-Cut Diamond lead the sale of Magnificent Jewels which achieved a total of $65.1 million, marking a new record total for a jewelry auction at Sotheby’s New York.
Mounted in platinum ring, size 6½, the diamond is described as D color, internally flawless and Type lla. Though it was tagged with a pre-sale estimate of $19 million to $25 million, it sold for $22.1 million within three minutes of the commencement of the bidding.
Touted to to be one of the purest and most valuable type of diamonds, it has been chiseled out from a rough 200 carats stone found in a De Beers mine in South Africa.
Sotheby’s also stated that only six “perfect” diamonds weighing over 100 carats have sold at auction in the last 25 years. The head of Sotheby’s jewelry department in New York, Gary Schuler, described the diamond as “the definition of perfection”. He also added, “The colour is whiter than white, it is free of any internal imperfections and so transparent that I can only compare it to a pool of icy water.”
