Joining the ranks of Poseidon Undersea Resorts and a handful of other unique underwater hotels, Chinese developer Shimao is in the process of constructing a luxury hotel at the bottom of an old quarry in Shanghai’s Songjiang district. Though the hotel is not scheduled to open until next year, it is already receiving a lot of buzz and its futuristic design has earned it awards.
The Quarry Hotel will be an exceptionally green building; inspired by the natural environment and built in the old quarry so as to prevent further ecological damage, it will also be powered by geothermal energy and solar energy. Two storeys of the hotel will be located underwater, containing 383 guest rooms and a restaurant that faces a 10 meter deep aquarium. The facilities will unsurprisingly include a swimming pool complex and water-based sports. Above the water level, there are plans to have extreme sports such as bungee jumping and rock climbing using the quarry walls.
Visitors will enjoy a waterfall that cascades down into the quarry, as well as waveform architecture and a glass ‘waterfall’ pillar that will descend through the center of the hotel.
If you can’t wait until 2017 to see what an underwater vacation is like, you can always check out Poseidon Undersea Resorts.
