The Rolls Royce-powered Eurocopter X3 completed its Step 1 speed objective attaining a total airspeed of 180 kts (333 km/hr) in level flight at a reduced level of engine power. The stunning prototype achieved this performance objective at the DGA Flight Test base in Istres, France. Other tests have seen the X3 reach an altitude of 12,500 ft. and maneuvering with left and right turns at bank angles of up to 60°. The X3 is based on a Dauphin helicopter airframe and is equipped with two Rolls-Royce turboshaft engines that power a five-blade main rotor system as well two propellers on its short-span fixed wings.
