Inspired by the growing trend of electric bikes and arguably by science fiction movies, designer Philippe Starck and cycling equipment manufacturer Giro partnered up for this project of reinventing the bike helmet to reflect the changing times.
Starck, who has himself designed electric bikes under the S+Arckbike banner, utilized unusual materials such as an aluminum shell and a cork liner.
“The increasing power of man and machine create new needs and new ergonomics that I have decided to take on with Giro, the most innovative player in this industry,” says Starck.
Cork is not only water resistant but also offers anti-microbial protection, according to Giro, and the aluminum shell can be recycled once the user wishes to replace his helmet.
The futuristic design reflects, symbolically, the technical advancements made in the bicycle, while the face cover can come in handy for e-bikers, capable of traveling at faster speeds and longer distances, giving them the need for increased protection.
The concept helmet design, called Giro by S+ARCKBIKE, was introduced last week at Eurobike.
