Recent sales figures of phones put Nokia in the top spot with over 110 million units shipped in Q3 of 2010. The big news, however, was the move by Apple, which moves into the fourth spot on the strength of iPhone 4 sales, with just over 14 million units sold – a significant achievement considering Apple didn’t offer any phones until 2007. Apple replaces Sony in the top five rankings, which now are as follows:
Nokia: 110.4 million
Samsung: 71.4 million
LG: 28.4 million
Apple: 14.1 million
R.I.M.: 12.4 million
Nokia’s top spot is tarnished by the fact that their market share has dropped to 32% – down from 36%. Their lack of a top selling smartphone will likely continue to hound the Finnish manufacturer.
Other trends are strong growth by Samsung – and a drop by LG. Samsung has heavily invested in the Android OS. LG, like Nokia, has not sold well in the smartphone market.
